1. SALMON

Salmon is an ideal food for many reasons, but as far as your skin’s concerned, there’s only one that matters: It’s among the world’s greatest sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Those are the essential fats that, along with bolstering the cognitive powers of your brain, concentrate in the walls of your epidermal cells to help lock in moisture. Plus, in one study, researchers supplemented two groups of mice with either omega-3 or omega-6 fats. After two weeks, the skin of the omega-3-fed group exhibited a 20 percent faster recovery rate from exposure to ultraviolet light. That gives salmon two crucial skin boons: keeping your skin from looking dry and helping it battle the dangers of excessive sunlight.

Other omega-3 foods: sardines, walnuts, flaxseed

Bonus Tip: Sushi is one of my favorite ways to eat salmon. Use our Ultimate Sushi Selector to make sure your sushi roll doesn’t turn into a belly roll.

2. CARROTS

Carrots are teeming with tiny orange pigments called beta-carotene, and when you ingest those pigments, you’re inviting them to nestle into your skin, fill in blotches, and give you a healthy glow. And what’s more, research shows that this can actually help prevent premature aging from sun damage. But is the accumulation of orange in your skin going to make you look like an extra from Jersey Shore? Well, hopefully not. But eating excessive loads of carotene-rich foods can lead to a condition called carotenosis, wherein your skin stops looking healthy and starts looking, well, orange. But the conditions is rare, so unless you notice yourself turning into a prison jumpsuit, feel free to chow down.

Other beta-carotene foods: sweet potatoes, red bell peppers, red grapefruit

3. AVOCADO

One study published by The Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that people with higher intakes of olive oil had fewer wrinkles than people with higher intakes of butter. The reason: Butter is loaded with saturated fat, while olive oil is rich in monounsaturates, the same essential fats that make up more than 50% of the calories in an avocado. So why eat avocado over olive oil? Both are good, but avocados have the added bonus of B vitamins, which also help to keep your skin looking vibrant and smooth.

Other monounsaturated-fat foods: olive oil, almonds, peanut butter

Bonus Tip: These foods are only the tip of the super-food iceberg. Click here for 15 more Foods that Cure.

4. BEANS

Legumes, to be more precise. This is the class of plants that includes black beans, chickpeas, lentils, soybeans, and peanuts. And how do these puny pods protect your face? By smoothing out wrinkles. Australian researchers analyzed the diets of more than 400 elderly men and women and found that high intakes of legumes—alongside vegetables and healthy fats—resulted in 20% fewer wrinkles over time. The effect is likely a result of isoflavones—potent antioxidants—concentrated in the beans.

Other isoflavone-rich foods: alfalfa, tempeh, tofu

5. GRAPES

Besides providing protection from heart attack and stroke, antioxidants called polyphenols found in grapes can also help keep middle-aged skin from sagging. That’s because polyphenols improve skin’s elasticity by strengthening collagen, the primary protein in skin’s innermost layer.

Other polyphenol-rich foods: grape juice, blueberries

Bonus Tip: Here’s another easy way to tighten your skin and improve your looks: Lose 5 pounds. Start here: 10 simple weight-loss strategies that work.

6. WATER

Okay, it’s not as fun to drink as wine, but water is the strongest weapon you have against lifeless skin. That’s why they call it “moisturizing”—because you’re trying to lock moisture, aka water, into your skin. To put it broadly, all the body’s processes rely on hydration, so if you’re not sipping throughout the day, you’re likely to have a slower metabolism, groggier head, and, yes, drier skin. One study suggested that it takes a mere half-liter of water to create a measurable increase in the capillary blood flow to your body’s outer layer. That’s just over 16 ounces. Try doing that a few times a day and you’ll have a face like a baby’s bottom in no time.

Other water-rich foods: watermelon, peaches, celery

Acne occurs when dead skin cells clog the skin’s sebaceous glands, often contributing to increased breakouts, redness and oiliness. We recommend treatments and products that address this problem through detoxification and by targeting inflammation and oil production.

Usually the result of hormonal activity, stress and/or poor dietary habits, acne occurs when dead skin cells aren’t properly shed and clog the skin’s sebaceous glands (natural oil-producing glands). Characterized by excessive blemishing, redness and/or oiliness, acne often first appears during adolescence, yet can continue and reappear later in life. In addition to traditional treatments and antibiotics—which can be toxic to the system—harsh chemical ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate and benzoyl peroxide can worsen this condition and spark rebound breakouts. Carol Robinson, lead Aesthetician, addresses this concern with soothing, natural ingredients designed to eliminate toxins and target inflammation and excess oil production.

Back to the Basics

Help Your Skin Stay Healthy, Healed And Hydrated With A Daily Dose Of Moisturizer

Although skin produces its own natural oil, called sebum, it still needs an extra boost, especially during the drier, colder months. Harsh weather and lack of humidity in the air can zap skin of the vital moisture it needs to stay healthy and vibrant.

Besides drinking water and following a healthy diet, a good moisturizer can play a crucial role in keeping your skin nourished and refreshed. Weather conditions, a stressful schedule and just plain negligence can affect your skin, but with the right moisturizer, it will remain radiant no matter what’s going on in your life.

Keep That Glow Year Round!

When you keep your skin hydrated with the right moisturizer, you will see an instant difference in how it looks and feels. Ingredients such as aloe vera and vitamins E and C, as well as products containing an SPF (Sun Protection Factor), help to restore, hydrate and protect the skin against free radical damage and dryness.

Which One is Right for You?

Moisturizer is often developed to target various skin types, including dry, normal, oily and combination skin. Remember—even a small amount of moisturizer each day can make a world of difference to your skin. For the best results, choose one that complements your skin’s needs.

Dry Skin

If you have dry skin, then keep in mind that it needs extra moisture. Since this skin type is also more prone to the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, choose a moisturizer that will provide added
hydration without clogging pores.

Normal Skin

If you have a healthy sebum balance, then your skin will appear moist but not greasy. This indicates that you have a normal skin type and can use a moisturizer that will not only hydrate the skin, but protect it as well. Generally, normal skin looks clear and requires gentle treatment.

Oily Skin

Oily skin is caused by the over-secretion
of sebum, whereby the skin attracts dirt and debris. Since this skin type is more prone to breakouts, it is important to choose a product that will keep skin hydrated without over-moisturizing the skin cells.

Combination Skin

This skin type is a blend of both oily and dry skin. Typically, the “T” zone (the forehead, nose and chin area) is oily, while the rest of the skin’s surface (usually the cheeks and the areas around the mouth and eyes) are dry. Select a moisturizer containing natural ingredients that are good for both oily and dry areas of the face.

Get Your Skin into Shape

Remember how your mother used to warn you, “if you keep making that face, it will freeze that way?” It ends up, she was right. Only rather than a mischievous grimace from our childhood, it is the expressions we make everyday that end up permanently etched in our complexions.

As we age, our skin loses elasticity, making it harder to return to its original shape after years of smiling, laughing and crying. Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can take to avoid a permanent record of life’s ups and downs. By getting your skin in shape, you can easily prevent many signs of premature aging and even correct some that have already begun. Read on for tips and tricks on how to tone, tighten up and take years off your look.
Drink More Water

Proper hydration is an essential part of any workout, and skin fitness is no exception. Aside from moisturizing the skin from within, drinking eight to ten glasses of water a day will also help flush toxins and increase circulation and elasticity, leaving skin supple, clear and glowing.

Start Fresh

Just as stretching prepares your body for a jog, cleansing prepares skin for your regimen. That is why it is important to look for a cleanser that not only washes away dirt and impurities, but also maintains the skin’s delicate pH and moisture balances. Irritant-free and formulated for optimal ingredient communication, chirally correct cleansers deep clean without stripping away the skin’s natural oils, so you can begin your regimen with a truly clean slate.
Apply Before You Dry

Like a sponge, your skin absorbs products best when it is already damp. To make the most of your topical hydrator, apply directly after cleansing, when skin is still damp (not drenched) and pores are open. This traps in moisture, allowing the ingredients to work more effectively and for a longer duration.
Be Sun Smart

The leading cause of premature aging (wrinkles, lines, discoloration, etc.) is overexposure to harmful UV rays. While it is impossible to avoid sun exposure completely, regularly applying a moisturizer with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher can easily offset potential damage and nourish the skin with essential nutrients.
Be Firm

The best way to tackle stubborn wrinkles and thinning, sagging skin is to target weakened elasticity at its source. By using products designed to firm and tighten problem areas (such as around the forehead, mouth and eyes), we can rebuild skin definition and smooth over the signs of premature aging.
Take Your Vitamins

While most of us are aware of the internal benefits of a daily multi-vitamin, the external benefits on the skin are just as dramatic and well-documented. As our barrier from the elements and often the last stop for toxins exiting the body, the skin is a reflection of our overall health. By taking a skin-specific multivitamin, you can improve your outward health and appearance by fostering a healthy environment within and ensuring that skin is as well-nourished as the rest of your body.

For great skin, follow a few simple tips and tricks of the trade that will have your complexion looking flawless in no time. Start fresh with these easy tidbits—your skin will love you!

01 CATCH SOME ZZZ

We all know that getting a good night’s sleep will refresh your mind and body, but what about your skin? Sleep is necessary for our bodies to build up energy reserves and regenerate body cells and tissues. Getting an adequate amount of sleep each night also helps the body to metabolize free radicals. So keep skin looking radiant by catching some extra zzz’s.

02 TAKE YOUR VITAMINS

Healthy skin starts with a healthy diet of protein, vegetables, fruits and carbohydrates. Also, taking a multi-vitamin provides your skin with tons of benefits. Vitamins give you energy, prevent disease and protect the body from harmful environmental elements. A daily dosage is helpful in keeping skin beautiful, both inside and out.

03 DRINK MORE (WATER, THAT IS!)

There is simply no substitute for water. The majority of the human body, including 85 percent of the brain, is comprised of water. Maintain your skin’s radiant glow and improve its texture by drinking plenty of water. Believe it or not, water is one of the best methods (and the cheapest, too!) for keeping your skin healthy and supple.

04 GO NATURAL

Purify and refreshen your skin by indulging in a weekly, at-home or spa facial treatment like a face mask—an important step that is often overlooked in a skin care regimen. Also, choose a mask that contains natural exfoliating ingredients, which will not only keep your skin cleansed and nourished, but will also serve as a gentle exfoliator.

05 PROTECT! PROTECT! PROTECT!

Although it’s common only to think about sun protection during the summer months, you should still use a product with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) during the winter season. Even in colder weather, the sun can cause damage to the skin. Prevent premature aging and the formation of lines and wrinkles
by using a product that will protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

06 GOODBYE DRY

Using a product that’s packed with moisturizing properties will keep your skin looking youthful and healthy all year long. Now that winter has arrived, it’s time to switch out your lightweight face cream for something a little more moisturizing. Remember to choose products that will deliver a daily infusion of moisture to keep skin supple.

07 EXFOLIATE… EVERYWHERE!

Since cold weather can sometimes zap moisture from the skin, it is important to exfoliate to keep it fresh and revitalized. Exfoliating both your face and your body on a weekly basis will remove dead skin cells, dirt and debris, and will help creams to set in faster and deliver added moisture.

Epidermal Leveling removes dead skin cells in addition to the fine vellous facial hair (”peach fuzz”) that can trap excess dirt and oil and leave the complexion looking dull. It also stimulates &rejuvenates skin tissue, making it an effective way to reduce acne scarring, uneven pigmentation, and fine lines & wrinkles. Most people notice marked improvements in the texture and appearance of their skin immediately after their first treatment, making it an excellent procedure to have prior to a special event. Epidermal Leveling can be used alone or in conjunction with other procedures such as enzyme infusions, peels or microcurrent. It is non-invasive and does not require the use of any chemicals, making it suitable even for our pregnant and nursing clients.
